Ruby Smallbone's self-titled fashion label is an adventurous mix of sexy and sophisticated tailored designs. Since the beginning of the label in 2007, her fashions have been worn by many on the A-list—Kate Hudson, Eva Mendes and Keira Knightley to name a few.

We caught up with the Australian designer to talk style and what inspired her new autumn/winter collection, Rapture, which is now available at our new online boutique, Shop It!.

Describe a day in Ruby's shoes... "I love to meditate and walk my dog, so I'm up and about quite early most mornings. It helps me focus and plan my day before fashion mode sets in. At the moment my highest priority is drawing inspiration for spring/summer 10/11 and many fabric appointments are underway. I can't wait for you to see the hot summer colour palettes that are coming through for my new range. Hypnotic graphic prints and bright whites are a must!"

What is your idea of style…"A unique look that is slightly undefinable and worn with absolute ease."

Tell us about your autumn/winter collection. "Autumn/winter 10 is titled 'Rapture' meaning ecstatic joy or delight. It's sexy, structured and a bit tough."

What's your favourite item in the range? "It would be a cross between the 'Dopamine Rush' draped dress and the 'Golden Cage' mesh strapless dress."

Could you describe the Ruby Smallbone design philosophy? "Sophisticated sex appeal with a composed and uncomplicated quality."

What is this season's must-have item? "Definitely the 'Skyline' tights from my 'Rapture' range."

Describe the Ruby Smallbone girl in three words? "Confident, alluring and grounded."

What do you consider to be chic right now? "I love the new Panthere de Cartier collection. Cartier's jewellery is the epitome of chic and the Panthere de Cartier collection is truly beautiful." 

If you weren't a designer, what would you be? "An artist of some sort, hopefully."

Where is your favourite place to shop?"I love picking up bits and pieces from Macleay on Manning in Potts Point , Sydney."

What was your most recent splurge? "A pair of Camilla Skovgaard heels."

What is your earliest fashion memory? "Dressing up as Madonna when I was seven. I had about four different Madonna ensembles I wore quite frequently. Fun!"

What is the one thing you can't live without? "LOVE."

What's your fashion week survival secret? "Rescue Remedy!"

Which international designer's pieces do you most covet? "It changes from season to season, but currently it would be Isabel Marant, Etro and Givenchy."

What is your signature scent? "Anna Sui — Sui Dreams."

What is your must-take-everywhere beauty item? "Lucas Papaw Ointment and MAC eyeliner in Teddy."

What's your favourite holiday destination? "Capri in Italy"
Who has worn your designs? "Kate Hudson, Keira Knightly and Mischa Barton."

Is there a celebrity that you would love to dress one day? "Diane Kruger."

Do you have a secret passion or love outside of fashion? "Music."
